Meeting patients’ need for plasma and plasma-derived therapies

About Plasma4life

The goal of this initiative is to create a neutral, UN-based platform that will bring together experts, policymakers, patient organizations, academia, civil society and the private sector. Through increasing awareness, building partnerships and facilitating access to the latest scientific knowledge and best practices, this platform aims to support countries in finding their own tailored solutions on how to improve the quality of life and life expectancy of patients who rely on plasma-derived therapies. The platform also focuses on complementing and finding synergies with other existing initiatives to improve plasma ecosystems and increase patient access to care.

Why

Plasma-derived therapies are life-saving treatments used to treat rare and life-threatening diseases resulting from trauma, congenital deficiencies, immunologic disorders and infections. However, global demand for plasma and vital therapies derived from plasma far exceeds supply. Unequal access to plasma-derived therapies, especially in low- and middle-income countries, leaves many patients without adequate treatment.

For this reason we aim to bring all key actors together to discuss the challenges related to plasma supply with the overall goal to strengthen access to plasma-derived therapies for rare disease patients.

Blood Plasma Initiative meets Sustainable Development Goals

The ultimate goal of the Platform is to help improve access to plasma-derived therapies for rare disease patients, improving thus their quality of life.

Our Knowledge hub gathers all relevant information, including most recent evidence-based knowledge, concerning plasma and plasma-derived therapies.

Our initiative will focus on low- and middle-income countries where we aim to build local ownership in order to drive sustainable growth, leading to reducing inequalities within and among countries.

The Platform is an example how public-private partnerships can address the challenges of global plasma supply.
